Why Southwest Missouri Roofs Take So Much Hail
Missouri averages about 574 NOAA hail reports a year since 2000, and about 52% of them land in April and May. Taney County, home to Branson, has logged 232 hail records across 133 days since 1962, including golf-ball-size hail in 2012 and quarter-size hail west of Branson in 2015 (PlainHazard analysis of NOAA storm data).
Straight-line winds come with the same spring storms. Wind lifts and creases shingles, breaks the seal strips that hold them down, and tears off ridge caps. A roof can look fine from the driveway and still have damage that leaks next year.
Signs of Hail and Wind Damage
- Dents in soft metals: gutters, downspouts, roof vents, window screens and A/C fins. If the metal is dented, the shingles were hit too.
- Granules in the downspouts or splash blocks after a storm.
- Dark spots or bruises on shingles where granules were knocked loose.
- Creased, lifted or missing shingles after high wind.
- New leaks or water stains on ceilings, especially around chimneys, vents and skylights.
- Dented or chipped metal roof panels and damaged siding on the windward side.

What Happens at a Free Storm Damage Inspection
- We walk the roof, or fly it with a drone when conditions allow, and check every slope.
- We mark and photograph the damage, including the soft metals, gutters, siding and windows the storm hit.
- We measure the roof so the scope is accurate.
- We show you what we found in a photo report and tell you plainly whether it is worth an insurance claim. If the damage is minor, we will say so.
- If you file a claim, we can meet your adjuster on the roof and point out every damaged area.

Repair or Replace After a Storm?
A few creased or missing shingles from wind can usually be repaired. Widespread hail hits across the slopes usually mean replacement, because hail-bruised shingles lose granules and age faster even when they are not leaking yet.
Adjusters often use a test-square method: they mark off a 10-by-10-foot square on each slope and count the qualifying hail hits inside it. Enough hits in the test squares supports replacing that slope or the whole roof. Read more in our guide to repairing or replacing a roof.
Working With Your Insurance Company
Most storm damage roofs in our area are paid for by homeowners insurance, minus your deductible. Knowing how the claim works keeps you from leaving money on the table:
- Replacement cost (RCV) vs. actual cash value (ACV): an RCV policy pays the full cost to replace the roof, usually in two checks. An ACV policy subtracts depreciation for the roof’s age, so you get less.
- Recoverable depreciation: on most RCV policies, the first check holds back depreciation. You get it after the work is finished and the final invoice is sent.
- Supplements: if the adjuster missed items like drip edge, ice and water shield or code-required work, we document them and submit a supplement.
- Deductible: you pay it. Missouri law prohibits roofers from paying or waiving it. See why deductible deals are illegal.
- Deadlines: many policies set a deadline measured from the date of the storm, sometimes as short as 12 months. See when to file a roof insurance claim.

Hail Damage on Metal Roofs, Gutters and Siding
Storms rarely hit only the shingles. We inspect and document hail damage on metal roofs, gutters and downspouts and vinyl siding, and on commercial roofs, churches and multifamily buildings through our commercial roofing team.

Hail & Storm Damage FAQs
How do I know if hail damaged my roof?
Most hail damage cannot be seen from the ground. Look for dents in gutters, downspouts, roof vents, window screens and A/C fins, and for granules piling up at the bottom of downspouts. If those show dents, the shingles above them were probably hit too. A free inspection with photos is the only way to know for sure.
What size hail damages a roof?
Hail about 1 inch across (quarter size) and larger can bruise or crack asphalt shingles, especially older or brittle ones. Smaller hail driven by strong wind can also cause damage. Size alone does not decide it; the age and type of your roof matter too.
Should I call my insurance company or a roofer first?
Get a free inspection first so you know whether there is real damage before you open a claim. If we find damage, you report the claim to your insurance company. We provide the photos and measurements to back it up.
How long do I have to file a hail damage claim in Missouri?
Your policy sets the deadline, not the state. Many policies set a deadline measured from the date of the storm, sometimes as short as 12 months. Check your policy or ask your agent, and do not wait for the next storm to look.
Will filing a hail claim raise my insurance rates?
A weather claim is not the same as an at-fault claim, but carriers handle rates differently and premiums across Missouri have been rising regardless. Ask your agent how your carrier treats weather claims before you decide.
Can a roofer pay or waive my deductible?
No. Missouri law (RSMo 407.725) prohibits residential roofing contractors from offering to pay, waive or rebate your insurance deductible. A roofer who offers that is asking you to commit insurance fraud.
Do you repair hail damage on metal roofs, gutters and siding?
Yes. We inspect and document hail damage on metal roofs, gutters, downspouts and vinyl siding along with the shingles, so everything the storm damaged ends up in one claim.
Can you put a tarp on my roof after a storm?
Yes. If the storm opened up your roof or it is leaking, call or text (417) 222-7535. We install emergency tarps to protect the house until the permanent repair or replacement.
